Challenge
Plan International needed a way for young women and girls to share safety-related experiences in public space — first in Melbourne, then in cities around the world.
Approach
Free to Be was co-designed with young women and girls and delivered on CrowdSpot. Melbourne launched in 2017. In 2018 the method expanded to five cities with full language translations so participants could contribute in their own languages.
Outcome
Melbourne and the five-city expansion generated thousands of spots. Results were shared with decision makers, and the method became a reference for gendered safety mapping internationally.
