Challenge

Safety is the biggest barrier to riding. Research cited on BikeSpot notes that 78% of people are interested in cycling but are only comfortable in protected lanes. Councils needed community evidence on perceived risk, not only crash stats.

Approach

BikeSpot crowdsourced perceptions of cycling safety on CrowdSpot across three campaigns — growing from metropolitan Melbourne, to statewide Victoria, then the first national BikeSpot.

Outcome

BikeSpot 2023 alone gathered over 72,000 submissions (19 Oct 2023 – 31 Jan 2024), with national, NSW, and Greater Bendigo reporting. The archive map keeps the evidence public for infrastructure priorities.
